0.2.7-RC3 release
Hello all,
The 0.2.7-RC3 release is available, as a bug-fix/optimization release.
Bug fixes:
- Compressed IOS images for MIPS platforms were not working anymore. This is now fixed. You still have to uncompress images for the 2600 platform.
- Cisco 3725 - slot 2 problem : slot 2 was not usable in RC2 leading to a lockup.
Optimizations:
- New PowerPC JIT compiler which allows to add some optimizations for the generated code: register allocation, peephole optimizations, more efficient Condition Register (CR) handling.
Files:
0.2.7-RC3 binary for Linux x86 platforms
0.2.7-RC3 binary for Linux x86_64 platforms
0.2.7-RC3 binaries for Windows XP and 2000
0.2.7-RC3 source code
Chris.

Great software!!! Thanks!
April 28th, 2007 at 7:06 am
Does this release need any DynaGen updates?! I guess not!
Anyway, THANK YOU FOREVER!!

Hey Chris ,
How are u man ,
The more i play with dynamips the more i am getting addicted to it…
Today i tried IP telephony with it and it eas really amazing looking at two telephone ringing….
Amazing…..
U r great….

chris and greg reminds me of the dynamic duo, batman and robin
i finally ported my entire dynamips/dynagen lab to ubuntu, and it works pretty well with my pemu lab. under linux platform, the lab performs more smoothly and much faster, i was forced to learn linux commands in order to put everything up and i’m quite happy with it now. just so many previous posts in hacki’s that aided me a lot, and i wish to express my gratitude to all the contributors that shared their expertise and experience. +oil av8d!!!

I just posted Dynagen 0.9.2. This is a minor update to fix some bugs and to include dynamips 0.2.7-RC3 in the Windows package. I also made some updates to the tutorial to correct some misinformation I was giving regarding ghostios, sparsemem, and mmap.
Version 0.9.2
* Fixed required version string
* Removed false warning message when autostart is used at the router level
* Added some info and fixed some misspellings in all_config_options.txt
* Added the console command. It is identical to the telnet command. It occurred to me that “telnet” is a misleading command since a connection to the console is actually being made. But you can use which ever one you prefer, and you can abbreviate “console” as “con” if you wish.

Thanks again for your great work. You ‘re helping as a lot.
I’m wondering if there is any progress regarding the serial interfaces on C2600XM.
Thanks again

The previous problem that I start my lab on the 3640 router, which is c3640-ik9o3s-mz.124-7.extracted.bin. I type the “copy run start” command and exit the router and dynagen. However, I cannot control the router (Cannot the type any command, no response, the router hang!!!)after I started the lab again.
But I notice that the clock is incorrect and a message “% Error! No serial number found for this platform.” is shown during boot up but the clock is correct on any other platform.
Is it a bug ? Does this problem crash the router itself?
May 1st, 2007 at 3:31 am
The clock on so many router platform are restored to the originate date during every time boot up. How to solve this problem? However, the clock on 7200 platform is OK.

I also noticed that the sparsemem had no affect since i noticed my memory PF usage went twice the amount of ram compared to the 3640s with the same config….in fact, the 2600s had only 64RAM and the 3640s have 128RAM but yet the 3640 have lower amount of PF usage!
Hope this helps to trace the bug. Thanks a lot Prof Chris and sorry to bring up something unpleasant to you!

Thanks again, Chris.
Congratulations to the person who passed the exam (I hope to pass the CCIE within the next year … not necessarily my biggest concern though).
I wish I could help people with their problems with this and the last release but I haven’t moved from RC1 yet because it works so far for what I’ve been doing … maybe soon I’ll jump to RC3.

Whoops, forgot to say thanks to Greg too - DynaGen really makes using DynaMIPS unintimidating.

kevin> Well, except for mispelling, and I haven’t labbed this up, I think you’ve double-referenced some things … much like under one router you say connect Fa0/0 to the other router’s Fa0/0, under the next router if you say connect his Fa0/0 to the first router’s Fa0/0, you run into problems (at least I did … so I reference it in pne place only now). I think it should look more like this …

To make your life easier, try numbering them more like this:
# Colorado(1)Paris(2)
1:102 = 2:201
# Colorado(2)Tokyo(3)
1:103 = 3:301
# Paris(2)Tokyo(3)
2:203 = 3:302
and that might be all you need … at least it’s better than the nothing posted so far. Draw it out on paper and match up your DLCI’s.

This is great stuff guys. I’m a consultant and this setup saves me countless time, money and frustration in getting a handle on new technologies. You should put up a Donations link. I definitely feel like supporting your efforts and im sure others do as well. Looking forward to what’s next.
Keep up the good work.

Hi
Thanx for a great program, got this link by a fellow student, a really nice tool to have when preparing for exam.
I found one feature when installing the program though.
I had to add -I/usr/include/libelf to the Makefile to make it point to the right place for my libelf.h
I’m running OpenSuse 10.1 and don’t know if it’s this dist who puts the headers at a strange place or something else?

Hey Chris,
Just a small question. I am trying to setup dot1q-tunneling on the C3640 but the “switchport mode dot1q-tunnel” is missing on fa0/0 (I have the 16ethsw installed). I am running enterprise ios and Cisco feature nav says it supports dot1q tunneling? See sh ver:

jancyk> Hm, I haven’t labbed that up either, but can you configure the ports so that they’re directly connected, or try using an etherswitch module so you can control the virtual switch’s speed/duplex? I’m not sure why there is even the complaints of duplex mismatch as they’re supposed to already be connected to each other through a virtual switch, so that in itself sounds buggy (via virtual switch, you should be able to have hosts conenct at totally independent speeds/duplexes).

hello folks,
can anyone guide me how to connect our Dynamips Cisco router with other real devices, it seems somebody has tried already and got succeeded.
could any one help me?
need to check some issue in multi-vendor environment.
Thanks.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
carth> It’s relatively easy … but it helps if you have DynaGEN
1) Use DynaGen
2) run ‘dynamips -e’ (without quotes) to get a list of the Device values … in particular the one for the NIC you want to bind to a DynaMIPS router.
3) reference that value you recorded in your configuration file for your DynaGen instance.
Of course, that all assumes you’ve already worked with DynaGen / DynaMIPS and know what I’m talking about.
.
Alternatively, you can run dynamips directly from the command-line using the information you recorded and it might look something like this:
.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dynamips.exe -X -i 996 -t npe-200 -r 128 -p 0:C7200-IO-FE -s “0:0:gen_eth:\Device\NPF_{18FEDCD8-0217-4C8C-A817-C6DF7F1DFB6E}” –idle-pc=0×613f0720
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
which would bind the virtual 7200’s Fa0/0 port to my on-board NIC.
.
My output from running ‘dynamips -e’ is as follows:
.
C:\Program Files\DynaMIPS>dynamips.exe -e

I am trying to connect Dynamips routers simulated ethSw in the Internetwork Expert lab to a real 3560 switch. But I am dry on ideas. thinking to connect my NIC as a trunk to the switch but don’t know where to start. Guru’s help please.
May 16th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
joseph> Essentially it’s the same as my above post … again, I recommend you use the DynaGen front-end for DynaMIPS - it saves a lot of time and headaches for people like me. Bind a port on your etherswitch to your actual NIC, as I was discussing in the post above yours, and then configure your trunks as if they were both normal L3 switches (switchport mode trunk, speed, duplex, allowed vlans, etc).
May 16th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Well … I should add I don’t recall actually trying to trunk out my bound NIC, but I can’t imagine a problem - it’s only an 802.1Q header on normal packets passed over a native VLAN.

Hi Chris,
Thanks alot for your great efforts. You did a great favor for networking people.
I have a question, Do you have any plan to emulate juniper routers as well ?
May 21st, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Hello:
I’m study for CCVP and I need a card E1 or T1, but this interface doesn’t emulate in dynagen. When is posible have a this card?. Thanks
May 21st, 2007 at 7:33 pm
jancyk> I actually encountered the problem you described. On restart of a lab I started receiving duplex-mismatch errors between two etherswitch modules. Within the configs on both 3600’s, the ports were set to 100Mbps Full-Duplex, but upon performing a ’show interface’ on both routers, I found that one side ignored the config and said ‘Half-Duplex’. I had to go into config mode on the offending router and first perform a ‘duplex half’ and then ‘duplex full’ … merely typing ‘duplex full’ under the interface again did nothing to resolve the issue. Looks like a BUG to me.

I found that one side ignored the config and said ‘Half-Duplex’. I had to go into config mode on the offending router and first perform a ‘duplex half’ and then ‘duplex full’ … merely typing ‘duplex full’ under the interface again did nothing to resolve the issue. Looks like a BUG to me.
Might be a silly thing but have you tried using a later IOS version? Could be a bug in the IOS

The previous problem that I start my lab on the 3640 router, which is c3640-ik9o3s-mz.124-7.extracted.bin. I type the “copy run start command and exit the router and dynagen. However, I cannot control the router (Cannot the type any command, no response, the router hang!!!)after I started the lab again.
But I notice that the clock is incorrect and a message “% Error! No serial number found for this platform. is shown during boot up but the clock is correct on any other platform.
Is it a bug ? Does this problem crash the router itself?

I also encounter this error when I start a router. the error message is follow:
“% Error! No serial number found for this platform.
