Access to a c6500 SUP1A/MSFC1
Hi all,
Would someone be kind enough to provide me an access to a C6k with a Sup-1A/MSFC-1, for experimentation purposes ? (so, of course better if it’s a spare equipment).
Many thanks,
Chris.

Chris,
Sure thing - I can provide either a SUP1a as requested or I also have a SUP2. Just let me know which one you would prefer.
Send me an email with all the details; what type of access you need (console, etc…)

Hi Scott,
Many thanks for your proposal. In fact, I already have a spare C6k with Sup2/MSFC2, and I would like to study specifically the Sup1A/MSFC1. I’m sending a mail with the details.
June 12th, 2007 at 1:09 am
Do you need just remote access or physical access to the Sup?
I believe I have a Sup1a/MFSC2 sitting as a spare
June 12th, 2007 at 5:52 am
Hi Brandon,
A console access would be great but if it’s not possible I think a remote telnet access should be sufficient.
Thanks
June 13th, 2007 at 8:25 am
hi,
i can provide SUP1A/MSFC1, and access their console via remote Telnet Access-Server.
send mail to me, then i would connect the cat6500 to remote access-server
June 15th, 2007 at 12:24 am
If you need another access, I have a 6500 with SUP1A also in my office.
Just ask if you need remote (or even physical) access.. Italy and France are not so far.
BTW. Do you think it would be very hard to port Linux or BSD to a Cisco 7200 box? OpenBSD + OpenBGPd need 1/10 of RAM to run BGP compared to any IOS version.. and the casing of 7200 is so great..

i can find sup1a circuit diagram, do u need it.
and some module. pls mail to me.

Hi Chris
is there any good news to emulate c6500 ?
June 21st, 2007 at 11:39 am
Zorro> Thanks for the offer! Yes, IMHO it should be relatively hard. Moreover some devices (like the Serial or POS interfaces) require a microcode, which is Cisco property.
ccnam> I hope this question is a joke.

Would a Sup32-8GE do the trick? As long as you come from static IP address I can fix you access for 1 month.
I have Sup1a/MSFC2 (not MSFC1), but it would be nearly impossible to give you access …

Hallo.
And i can you give access to a 6500 + sup720 + msfc-3 (remote ssh and console)
Many thanks for this project!

Hi Scott
Would it be possible also to arrange access to the supervisor for myself as well please.
Many thanks

Hi,
Dont know if this is too much to ask but would like a 64bit version of Dynamips for Vista.
Keep up the great job you all are doing. Chris and Greg - you are my heroes.
Cheers

Hi Guys,
i have some problems on WinXP. Dynamips fall down and I don’t know reason, I just receive error message:
3 [unknown (0xB94)] dynamips 2912 _cygtls::handle_exceptions: Exception: STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION
2 [unknown (0×468)] dynamips 2912 _cygtls::handle_exceptions: Exception: STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION
440 [unknown (0×468)] dynamips 2912 _cygtls::handle_exceptions: Error while dumping state (probably corrupted stack)
599 [unknown (0xB94)] dynamips 2912 open_stackdumpfile: Dumping stack trace to dynamips.exe.stackdump
I have last Windows update (that should by a problem) on my computer, I’m using advancedenterprise ios 12.4.12. Pleas can you help me.
Many thanks for your responses.

Rama,
Unfortunately, a 64 bit version for any Windows platform would required a 64 bit version of Cygwin (which provides the Linux API emulation layer). And AFAIK there is no 64 bit Cygwin on the horizon.
August 12th, 2007 at 1:07 pm
Greg, in this URL: http://www.cygwin.com/ it says “The Cygwin DLL currently works with all recent, commercially released x86 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows, with the exception of Windows CE” Or this is a different thing and not applicable?!
August 12th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
In this case Cygwin is still running in 32 bit mode. See FAQ item #2:
2. What versions of Windows are supported?
Cygwin can be expected to run on all modern 32 bit versions of Windows, except Windows CE. This includes Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003 and the WOW64 32 bit environment on released 64 bit versions of Windows. As far as we know no one is working on a native 64 bit version of Cygwin.
August 12th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
I thought so actually that’s not a native 64bit but i was not sure!
but i think this new version is making it possible to utilize the 64 bit CPUs by installing windows 64 bits even though only dynamips will run in 32 bit mode! In the old days, even if i got 64 bit CPU i will not be able to install 64 bit windows becz the older version of the cygwin won’t run and therefore i will need to give up the capabilities of the both CPU and OS and only work on 32 bit windowz! Now at least it looks pretty cool, don’t u think so?

hi chris,
i do always put you in my daily prayers for the good work you have done for us all.
i just want to know, what you still have any thing in stock for us, like new updates, probability of emulating switches soon.
thanks

I am a network newbie, it seems that i can’t help more at this moment.
just say thank you very much for this project and whatever have done by you .
Thank you!!

Hi Chris,
Can’t give you enough kudos for the spectacular job you’ve done with Dynamips … I turn fellow engineers on to Dynamips every chance I get. I was curious if it is possible to run any of the voice features on the 3745, specifically CCME. I know that CCME requires additional files to be TFTPd to flash, and wasn’t sure how accessible the virtual RAM resident on disk is to read/write to. This would be a tremendous tool to use for testing CCME –> CCM configs with respect to dial plans, etc. I know that it’s a stretch, though I figured it doesn’t hurt to ask
Thanks,
joe

Hi Joe ,
There is a document which I posted related the issue you described ,
I used virtual IP Phones from ipblue.com , an to my surprise they didnt required the flash loads and registered with CME succesfully , also the calls
were succesfull .

Hi Chris and Greg,
I really appreciate this wonderful tool that you have created.
I am experimenting with a few things on how to make the simulation quicker. The topology I am working with is the Internetwork Expert CCIE R&S and SP workbook configurations.
I think that the emulator can work significantly faster if the number of files created by simulator is reduced (the various files such as C3600_R1_log, C3600_R1_nvram, bootflash, Ghost image files etc.) While acknowledging that there are valid reasons for creation of these files, Is there a flag that I could use to disable creation of all these files on the hard disk or keep the files in RAM only and do away with the disc access times. I am sure a RAM only option though either an increased need for RAM or lesser number of Routers being emulated in a Given RAM scenario will be fine.
Of course in Real routers, the actual files are on flash and there are no disc accesses and hence the real routers are significantly faster and can processes higher throughput.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Rama

Hi Chris and Greg,
I cannot compile dynamips on my cygwin environmnent because of inet6 problem. There is the error:
net.c: In function `n_ipv6_ntoa’:
net.c:84: error: `AF_INET6′ undeclared (first use in this function)
It seems that cygwin do not support IPv6, but I found in cygwin website that IPv6 was already supported. Unfortunatly, I do not found *any* version of cygwin with AF_INET6 and PF_INET6 enabled in socket.h.
September 4th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
Easy solution: Create a ram disk, make the ram disk your working directory then start dynamips etc from there.
September 5th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
from dynagen configuration file:
mmap = true # Set to false to use real memory rather than a disk file for router vitural memory. Conserves RAM at the expense of performance. Defaults to True

Valpa,
Here is a link to the IPv6 extensions for cygwin: http://win6.jp/Cygwin/
You will also need libelf: http://www.mr511.de/software/
February 6th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
To compile dynamips under cygwin, just set the HAS_RFC2553? variable to 0.
You need to install libelf (not available thru setp.exe).

Hi Chris!
First of all, congratz about the dynamips project.
Regarding the Cat6500 SUP1A access. I can provide you access to one during two weeks about the end of march.
Are you still interested?
Keep up the good work!

Hey All,
Thank you for the awesome simulator. I wish that i can help get the 3550 switch & 6500 switch emulated. is there anyway i can help Chris & Greg as i truly believe this product is awesome and would like to see layer 3 switches in dynagen/dynamips.
cheers,
