0.2.8-RC2 release
Hello all,
The 0.2.8-RC2 release is available. It’s mainly a bug fix release that requires no Dynagen upgrade (except for the ATM/Ethernet bridge).
New feature:
- Ethernet/ATM bridge, conforming to the RFC1483 (bridged mode). I added this because I’ve this kind of devices on my network (xDSL modem). It will require a Dynagen upgrade to be usable.
Bug-fixes:
- Fixed a PowerPC JIT bug that caused crashes on some 2600 images and prevented OSPF to work correctly on this platform ;
- Fixed handling of CRC for WIC slots on 2691/3725/3745 ;
- Fixed a bootflash malfunction occuring on 3600/7200 platforms ;
- Added TCP keepalives for VTTY connections (ie console and aux ports) ;
- Added ISL support for 2691/3725/3745 on-board Ethernet ports.
Files:
0.2.8-RC2 binary for Linux x86 platforms
0.2.8-RC2 binary for Linux x86_64 platforms
0.2.8-RC2 binaries for Windows XP and 2000
0.2.8-RC2 source code

Thanks. I have developed a winform software. Can use?
October 18th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
Chris and Greg,
Its charm saw that we have added ISL support; any chances are there that, can we use RSTP and MSTP? Do we have these things in our roadmap of Dynamips?
If we replace this Dynamips 2.8 RC2 exe, shall we use GNS3 with any problem?
Marvellous work

Thank you!
and would you consider to release the 64bit version for winxp64bit or vista 64bit ?

Thanks for this great tool.
Could use please add extra example to readme concerning “gen_eth” usage on Windows? Unfortunately, this is not obvious that
rpcap://\Device\NPF_{542C4B78-AD34-4B82-8C7F-3CB08F99A64D}
(generated by “dynamips -e”) should actually be used as
“\Device\NPF_{542C4B78-AD34-4B82-8C7F-3CB08F99A64D}”
(especially the part about quotes - there is no correct error message, dynamips crashes)

Thanks for developing and sharing this great piece of software.
I’m just curious. Is ISDN support planned, or under work? It would be great to be able to lab scenarios with ISDN failover/backuplines etc.

Hi Chris,
I can’t compile this dynamips version in FreBSD from source since it requires libdl but FreeBSD doesn’t use such library.
Quoting http://swik.net/FreeBSD/About:
“Besides that, FreeBSD also has some technical differences which set it apart from Linux. Some of them are very important to know, even if you don’t plan on developing for Gentoo/FreeBSD:
* Dynamically linked executables are not linked against libdl, like in Linux + glibc systems. Instead they are linked against libc.”

I have been running into an odd crash… I have been using a VMWare image I made of a CenOS 5.0 basic workstation with the emulator as the only additional task, I created my image with 3 ethernets and mapped them to the standard ethernet ports. I use a VMware Team so the first ethernet is bridged to the real network interface, the other 2 are mapped to VMware’s virtual lans. After running dynamips for several days, about 4, I will get a File Full error and dynamips will crash. How can I find out what file dynamips is filling up, I assume it is some temp file. How can I help you, help me to figure out what is going wrong.

I always met the crash of C2600 with wic module.
My lab environment is C2651XM with C2600-JS image. The lab is always crashed when I save the configuration. Could you please check and correct it in the last version. Thanks a lot.

Hello Chris,
I am having the same problem when creating a c2600 environment with wic cards. Sooner or later it crashes. I am looking forward the final release, meanwhile I just went back using the 3600 series which work perfectly.
Thanks for your great simulator,

Dear Chris,
I have a bug report: GT96K hardware emulation is broken.
PC — Fa0/1 3725 Fa0/0 — Fa0/0 3725 Fa0/1 — PC
GRE/IPsec or IPIP/ipsec tunnel is configured using embedded Ethernets in 3725/3745 (GT96K controllers). Tunnel mode is either “gre ip” or “ipip”, encryption is done by separate crypto map attached to Ethernet interface. EIGRP or OSPF is running over the tunnel. Nothing more is configured.
When I send small pings from PC to PC over the tunnel (1oo bytes) it works fine forever, but when I send 1000 bytes pings over tunnel, Ethernet interfaces of 3725 get frozen after 10-15 pings. “Frozen” means that interface still receives traffic but does not send it out anymore. “show interface f0/0″ shows that “Output queue:” counters are increasing until the queue reaches its limit (40 packets). After reaching the queue limit, “Output drops:” counters start to increase. Frozen interface does not send out the packets from output queue. Input queue is OK - packets from the world are still received and processed by IOS. Sometimes only 1 interface get frozen, sometimes all 4 interfaces on both routers get frozen in the same time.
100% reproducable.
This is recovered by “clear interface f0/0″+”clear interface f0/1″. After clearing, interfaces work fine again, until there are next 10-15 big packets sent over tunnel. Issue is triggered both by ICMP and TCP big packets.
SW:
IOS 12.4.15T1, but bug seems to happen in all 12.3 and 12.4.
Dynamips 0.2.8-RC2, but bug happens in previous versions too.
Windows XP SP2.
Problem seems to happen only on embedded ethernets of 3725/3745 (GT96K). If I add additional Ethernet ports of any different type (ex.AMD) to virtual 3725 router and configure the same tunnel over these Ethernet ports, issue does not happen. Issue does not happen on 7206 ethernet interfaces too.
Issue seems to be performance-related: if I disable “ip cef” and fast switching, it does not happen, if I disable IPsec encryption it does not happen too. Physical PC CPU load in this test is close to 90-100%.
I can provide exact configs if necessary.
With best regards,
IceCat.

Hi Chris,
Just wondering if you can adapt dynamips a little bit
(I suggest using vpn30xxboot-4.0.Rel.hex boot code) to
boot the image and so emulate a Cisco VPN concentrator.
The 3005 model is a simple (like 2600 series I guess):
Motorola PowerPC CPU
Synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) for normal operation
Nonvolatile memory for critical system parameters
Flash memory for file management
—> and no DSP or ASIC it uses Software-based encryption.
Bonne Année
Happy New Year

Thanks for a great software. Now I can study for CCNA/CCNP and not just maintaining Microsoft product (Desktop and Server support)
But one question how can I make the image (from my CO.) to run and emulate 2651XM. The image was running OK with 2621 emulation.
This is my Dynagen conf.
# Another simple dynagen configuration file
# All the f0/0 interfaces are on VLAN 1 and the F1/0 interfaces are on VLAN 2

image = \Program Files\Dynamips\images\C2600-JS.image

console = 2001

Dynamips ’s serial interfaces always work as if there is a communication network between the connected serial interface. The router’s serial interface always perform as a DTE.
What you experience is normal in Dynamips simulation.

Hi
Thanks for all the great work.
I have a recommendation or two for some enhancements.
On the Internal Ethernet switch emulation within Dynamips, is it possible to add Q in Q Tunneling?
Use Case scenario:
Ethernet Switch Port 1 Dot1Q Trunk from R1.
Ethernet Switch Port10 Dot1Q Tunnel to external Switch.
Then on external switch I can do a Do1Q Tunnel configuration and Take
Dot1Q Trunk out. (May be I have to use two external Physical ports for this to work).
If Q in Q Tunnelling is supported, then even ISL can be taken through the tunnel to external switch and get it to work with One or two real switches.
I hope I did not clutter anything here and opening a new rat hole:(
Again I definitely appreciate all your work.
Cheers
Rama

Yudhi there is dynamips port in FreeBSD and its working properly with excellent performance
cd /usr/ports/emulators/dynamips
make install clean
i checked for both i386 and amd64 arch and this is work for me
March 11th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Hahaha, that’s great.
Anyway, just logging in to say ‘Hope all is well with everyone.’
I’m still using and praising and recommending DynaGen (blanket name for DynaMIPS ‘engine’ and the various accoutrements, like PEMU, and gDynaGen, and, of course, DynaGen).
Let me know if you need anything … I think I log onto Hacki.at as ‘Mark’ … if not, then I’m StMaybe.

Thank for you job.
in china , mostly people study cisco with dynamips
today i found that i can’t start the dynamips services on windows server 2008 rtm
i guess that server 2008 have the save system core with windows vista, in vista every thing is ok (already let the npf services start with windows), but why it can not run on server 2008 ?
thank you very much for you job

Hi Chris, hi guys,
I’m building a NMS and I am testing it on a network built with dynamips/dynagen only I have this issue with NM-16ESW counters: they never seem to change/increase… I tried many IOS versions (inlcuding those with advanced features) and on several platforms (2600, 3600) but the problem remains… no interface counter increasing and also the SNMP OIDs remains unchanged…
Chris, I know you had lots of issues with NM-16ESW, but if you have couple of minutes at some point, can you have a look at this?…
And thank you so much for this amazing tool… after I pass my CCIE I’ll be sure to send you a pack of beer from Oz (where I live atm).
Thank you!

Hi there,
I was wodering if anyone had found a fix for the problem reported by IceCat on December 18th, 2007 at 10:48 pm.
I am having exactly the same problem, my fastethernet interface freezes in my Dyanmips lab.
The workaround of using “no ip cef” in global config mode and “no ip route-cache” under the fastethernet interface does indeed work.

Hey Chris,
Just checking, could you please update us what is happening with you? Are you stuck with real-life job stuff or just decided to discontinue this project?
cheers,

Heya Chris - hope all is well with you still. Thankfully, with the economies in the tank, at least I can still afford the free invaluable tool you’ve donated to the community. Thanks for it yet again and for your patience, and I hope all is well with you. If you need assistance of some sort (my programming skills are purely in shell / PERL scripting, not ‘real’ programming), contact me at paquette_mark*AT*hotmail.com
Regards,
Mark

Hello Chris, you know that IOS XR is based on Unix OS. Do you have any idea if is possible to emulate IOS XR like Dynamips? Many thanks.

[…] file should be available on the same GNS3 download page but if it isn’t you can get it from the official site. It’s very important to use this specific release, the one listed on Dynamips home page […]

Bug fix for net_io.c, line 360:
static ssize_t netio_unix_send(netio_unix_desc_t *nud,void *pkt,size_t pkt_len)
{
return(sendto(nud->fd,pkt,pkt_len,0,
(struct sockaddr *)&nud->remote_sock,
// sizeof(&nud->remote_sock))); // Size of pointer?!?! Broke
sizeof(nud->remote_sock))); // Size of struct - works
}

Chris,
First, I wanted to say how much I love your sim/em-u-lator! It has been a great help. It has saved me time and $$$ on labs.
Second, wanted to know if your are working on or are you going to be posting a newer version? One that will run newer routers, like the 2800 routers.
Thanks!
